Water is our lifeline that bathes and feeds us. It also provides Our Earth with the capacity for supporting life. Unfortunately, the only organism that doesn't seem to understand the importance of Water is humans, especially in industrialized countries. During 2011, the Bayview Corridor of Synagogues was pleased to present three outstanding films that highlighted the importance of Water.
WE LIVE BY THE RIVER The documentary presented recent ongoing efforts by the Tribal Communities in Alaska and the First Nations Communities in the Yukon Territory to renew their partnership with their "Mother River". It detailed their actions and feelings of their healing journey as they reconnected with their environment.
LIVING DOWNSTREAM Raised in small-town Illinois, cancer seems to run in Sandra Steingraber's family. Sandra was diagnosed with bladder cancer when she was just twenty years old. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and many of her aunts and uncles have struggled with the disease. While cancer runs in her family, she cannot say it runs in her genes. Sandra is adopted. This film follows Sandra during one pivotal year as she travels across North America working to break the silence about cancer and its environmental links. The featured speaker was Dr. Georgina Willcock of CAPE (Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment).
